When we start training, it’s exciting. But as time passes, it’s easy to skip sessions or lose focus. Some of us are idealistic, thinking if we train in a temple or a beautiful place, it will make our training better.
But if we always focus on what is in front of us or what isn't here, then we're not in the here and now. And this is our place of power. This is where the energy of Zen lives.
Even though I've swapped the Shaolin Temple in China for a small flat in North London, I still train each morning. I don’t look for happiness or satisfaction in my practice. I train just to train.
Searching for peace, joy, or health is a distraction. Let it go. When you practice without desire, your training becomes pure. Your focus sharpens. Your movements and breath become one.
A Zen master once said:
To study Shaolin is to study yourself.
To study yourself is to forget yourself.
When you forget yourself, you become the movement.
Then there are no problems.
